Bill Leighton Jr. heads for a $5,300 victory in Greenwood, Neb.
What won the race: Bill Leighton Jr. of Lavista, Neb., snuck by race-long pacesetter Tad Pospisil of Norfolk, Neb., in lapped traffic on the 29th circuit and held on to score a $5,300 victory in Thursday night's 30-lap Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series feature at I-80 Speedway. When Pospisil lost momentum behind a slower machine entering turn one after taking the two-to-go signal, Leighton seized the moment to dive underneath and head to the biggest win of his career.
Quotable: "I just knew if I stayed close (to Pospisil) I had a chance," Leighton said in victory lane. "Maybe if he'd mess up, I'd have a chance. He usually doesn't mess up, but we got by him."
Key notes: Leighton crossed the finish line 1.204 seconds in front of Pospisil, who had Kyle Berck directly on his back bumper at the checkered flag. ... The victory was Leighton's first of 2018 and the 14th of his career on the Malvern Bank tour. ... Berck's third-place finish snapped his six-race Malvern Bank winning streak at I-80 dating back to July 21, 2016. … John Anderson slowed off turn two on lap 14 to bring out a caution flag. … Rece Vaught and Todd Shute tangled in turn two to trigger caution conditions on lap 19. ... The $5,300 first-place prize was the largest of the 2018 Malvern Bank schedule. ... The series returns to I-80 on Sept. 29
Winner's sponsors: Leighton's No. 24 Black Diamond Race Car carries a Scott Bailey engine and is sponsored by Taylor Quik Pik, Swain Construction and Wright's Feedyard.
Points chase: Ben Schaller (744) of Omaha, Neb., entered the night leading Kyle Berck (736), Jason O’Brien (708), Bill Leighton (706) and Tad Pospisil (704).
