Brandon Sheppard (B5) kept Brian Shirley (3s) in check at Jacksonville.
What won the race: Leading all 40 laps from the outside front row, Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., won Sunday's DIRTcar Summer Nationals race at Jacksonville. Sheppard turned back charges from polesitter Bobby Pierce and series champion Brian Shirley in traffic for a $5,000 victory.
Quotable: “It was all about the start of the race. The track was pretty top dominant there,” Sheppard said. “It was just one of them deals where I had to beat ‘em to the corner and luckily I had a good enough race car I took off pretty good on that start and got to (turn) one and was able to maintain my speed through there. After that it was all about staying up on the wheel more than he did. I knew he was gonna be right there the whole time. Bobby’s a really tough competitor and he runs the cushion really well at all these places.”
Key notes: Daniel Flessner’s lap-38 spin in turn four, the race’s lone caution, set up a three-lap shootout to the finish. … Sheppard, who had a two-length lead when the caution came out, pulled away late. … Brian Shirley ran second for 23 laps until Bobby Pierce slid ahead to grab second on lap 24. … Sheppard, the 2013 series champion, won his 18th career series race. … The race was a makeup of a June 20 rainout. ... Frank Heckenast Jr. won the Shepp's Speedway Tribute Dash for drivers who were in attendance from the original program. ... Kolby Vandenbergh and Jose Parga scratched from the feature.
Winner's sponsors: Sheppard's family-owned Rocket Chassis has a Pro Power Racing Engine and is sponsored by Valvoline, Kid's Castle Learning Center, Keyser Manufacturing, Champion Spark Plugs, Fire & Ale, Integra Shocks and Corrigan Race Fuels.
Points chase: Brian Shirley is the 2018 Summer Nationals champion.
