Dennis Franklin gets rolling before his victory at Carolina Speedway.
What won the race: Leading the final 28 laps after inheriting the lead under caution, Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, S.C., picked up his sixth career Gaston County Shrine 100 victory at Carolina Speedway. Franklin crossed the finish line 1.163 seconds ahead of Jonathan Edwards for a $3,000 victory. Series rookie Adam Yarbrough finished third.
Quotable: “Everything is clicking right now,” race winner Dennis Franklin said. “Luck’s on our side I guess you could say. We went to (Cherokee Speedway) last week with a little different setup than we had at Lancaster and it really wasn’t as good as it was at Lancaster. We put it back tonight like we had it at Lancaster. We just went out a little bit too early in qualifying and the track got a little bit faster there at the end. I knew we had a good car. We come in an gassed ‘er up and that’s the only thing we changed.”
Key notes: The third-running Franklin inherited the lead on lap two when polesittter and early race leader Doug Sanders, along with second-running Johnny Pursley, pulled off the track with mechanical issues. … The victory was Franklin's second Carolina Clash victory of the season and a series-leading 43rd career victory. … Franklin won earlier this month at Lancaster (S.C.) Speedway. … Ninth-starting Ross Bailes had engine problems in his G.R. Smith-backed No. 22; he drove David Yandle's backup car to a seventh-place finish. … Seventh-starting Brian Carswell, a four-time Blue Ridge Outlaw Late Models winner this season, was the first retiree. He finished 17th. … The annual event benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children. … The series returns to the Gatonia, N.C., oval Oct. 13.
On the move: Ben Watkins of Rock Hill, S.C., started 12th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Franklin's AES Racing Swartz Race Car is sponsored by Baird Transport, Nichols Plumbing & Piping and Textron Off Road.
Points chase: Before Carolina, Ross Bailes (792) of Clover, S.C., led Adam Yarbrough (751), Dennis Franklin (724), David Yandle (704) and Doug Sanders (692).
Car count: 17
Fast qualifier: Doug Sanders
Time: 16.071 seconds
Polesitter: Doug Sanders
Next series race: September 1, Lancaster Speedway (Lancaster, SC) $4,000
Editor's note: Corrects that Ross Bailes drove David Yandle's backup car rather than made an engine change in his G.R. Smith-owned ride.
