James Giossi takes the checkers at Proctor's Silver 1000.
What won the race: Taking the lead on a mid-race restart, James Giossi of New Richmond, Wis., claimed Thursday’s Silver 1000 victory at Proctor Speedway. The sixth-running Giossi cruised to victory over early leader Jesse Glenz for a $2,750 Wollak Construction WISSOTA Challenge Series triumph. Former winner Darrell Nelson finished third.
Key notes: James Giossi, a former sprint car driver in just his second year in a Late Model, earned his first career Wollak Construction WISSOTA Challenge Series victory. … Third-running Jeffrey Massingill got out of shape on the frontstretch and ended up spinning, collecting Travis Budisalovich and others just before halfway. Budisalovich's car ended up atop Massingill's machine at the end of the frontstretch. ... Although he was running ahead of Massingill, track champ and polesitter Tim McMann of Duluth, Minn., was blamed for the caution and sent to the rear; he elected to retire instead and finished 25th. ... Third-finishing Darrell Nelson was part of the scrape and ran most of the race without a hood. ... Last year's Silver 1000 winner Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., finished fifth after starting 13th. … Proctor hosted the series for just the fourth time. … Twenty of 25 starters completed the race.
On the move: Derek Vesel of Hibbing, Minn., started 22nd and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Giossi drives a GRP Motorsports MB Customs Race Car with sponsorship from State Farm, JRS Fab Shop, All Seasons Maintenance Service, Liquid Nitro, Sue’s Bar & Grill, GTK Towing, CMD Race Shocks and Auto Value.
Points chase: After Proctor, Pat Doar (1,396) of New Richmond, Wis., leads Marshall Fegers (1,275) and Steve Laursen (1,158).
