What won the race: Starting 11th, Justin Kay of Wheatland, Iowa, inherited the lead on lap 44 of 50 when pacesetter Mike Murphy Jr. of Colona, Ill., retired from the event. Kay controlled the final six laps as a late charge from Brian Harris fell short with Harris getting into the wall with two laps remaining.
Quotable: “It was a wild night, that’s for sure. Apparently, being the leader wasn’t the place to be,” Kay said. “Murph had the car to beat and would have won if he hadn’t broke. I was right next to Harris when he hit the wall. He was going for it all.”
Key notes: Kay now has eight victories in a row at Dubuque going back to last season (he's 6-for-6 in 2014). ... Murphy and Kay battled before the race leader retired. ... Dan Shelliam of Hazel Green, Wis., led the first 17 laps before Murphy took command. ... Jon Merfeld brought out a caution on the race's initial start. ... Jason Rauen slowed to draw an early yellow. ... Shelliam broke while running amongst the top five on lap 28. ... Rick Wendling of Hazleton, Iowa, won the non-qualifiers' race.
On the move: Kay charged from 11th to record his sixth career series victory.
Winner's sponsors: Kay drives a Barry Wright Race Car with sponsorship from Heinee Jo's, Jr's Place, Kay Farms & Elevator, Kay & Sons Trucking, Petersen Insurance and Wheatland Ag Center.
Points chase: Kay leaves Dubuque atop both the series and track point standings.
