Cory Hedgecock waves the checkers in victory lane at I-75 Speedway.
What won the race: Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., slipped under leader Kenny Collins down the frontstretch late in Saturday's 40-lapper at I-75 Speedway and grabbed his first career Southern All Star feature. Hedgecock earned $4,000 for the win. Tenth-starting Jason Manley finished third.
Quotable: “I wasn’t really saving my tires. I was trying to run a little (more) front brake so I could get in (the turn) harder,” said Hedgecock. “I was trying to get in (the turn) a lot lower than (Collins) so I could come off a lot lower so I could stop in the center of the corner. (We) had a lot of traction in this thing, so I could just drag race up off the corner.”
Key notes: Hedgecock finished 2.660 seconds ahead of Collins. … Nine of 24 starters completed 40 laps. … Series leader Jay Scott started from the pole and led the first eight laps but tangled with Mark Dodson while attempting to put Dodson a lap down. Scott retired in 21st. … Fast qualifier Vic Hill started on the outside front row, but completed only 11 laps and finished 15th. … Steve Smith of Powell, Tenn., struck a tire barrier in time trials and went for a frightening rollover accident; he was OK. ... The Southern All Stars visited I-75 Raceway for the second time in series history.
On the move: Mark Dodson of Caledonia, Miss., started 23rd and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Hedgecock’s Rocket Chassis is powered by an Eagle Racing Engine and sponsored by Cushman, Eagle Racing Engines, K&P Used Cars, Transport One, VooDoo Technology, Sweet Trucking Co., and Rebel Diesel Performance.
