Benji Hicks won the $5,000 Fastrak World Challenge.
What won the race: Benji Hicks of Mount Airy, N.C., led all 40 laps of Friday night's Fastrak World Challenge at Virginia Motor Speedway, earning a $5,000 check in the opener of the Crate Late Model circuit's World Championship weekend. Tyler Bare finished second, with Brett Hamm third.
Quotable: “It means a lot to me to win this race. The breast Cancer wrap, man, I’m telling you, it means the world to our family. My mom, she’s listening back home. This wrap is completely for her. She’s a breast Cancer survivor, twice. So everything that we do for this breast Cancer (awareness) in October, it means the world to us and it’s all for her.”
Key notes: Hicks finished 1.504 seconds ahead of Bare, of Rockbridge Baths, Va. … Bare late-race charge was thwarted when a yellow came out as Bare had caught Hicks in traffic. … Seventeen of the 30 starters completed the race, with 14 completing all 40 circuits. … The victory was Hicks' third Fastrak triumph of the season. His previous victories came in August at Princeton Speedway and Beckley Motorsports Park. ... Hicks was sporting a special pink paint scheme for breast cancer awareness month. ... Friday’s Fastrak World Challenge, on the undercard of the weekend’s Fastrak World Championship, was only open to Fastrak member drivers who had competed in at least seven Fastrak-sanctioned events this season. … Action continues Saturday with the $20,000-to-win finale.
Winner's sponsors: Hicks drives a Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Auto Zone, South Main Street and T&K Enterprises.
Points chase: Entering Friday’s non-points race, Matthew Nance (410) leads Fastrak tour standings over Brett Hamm (294) and Corey Almond (259).
