Daryl Charlier on his way to a $4,000 victory in Sunday's RUSH-sanctioned Bill Hendren Memorial.
What won the race: Daryl Charlier of Midway, Pa., overtook Grant Garrison of Walton, Ky., for the lead on lap 20 and marched on to capture Sunday's 40-lap RUSH Dirt Late Model Series-sanctioned Bill Hendren Memorial at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for the second straight year. Charlier advanced from the third starting spot take the $4,000 victory by a health 4.928 seconds over Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, W.Va.
Quotable: “This means a lot to win this at my home track,” the 34-year-old Charlier said. “To beat able to beat Jacob Hawkins — he’s been whopping my butt for a long time — and some of the other guys that came in … it’s good to keep the money at home, especially after the trouble I had (crashing) at the Jook (George) race (in August).”
Key notes: Charlier drove a 2008-vintage Rocket car to become the 11th different winner in 16 RUSH Tour events this season. ... Hawkins, Mike Pegher Jr. and Jeremy Wonderling all overtook Garrison late in the distance to finish in positions 2-4. Garrison settled for a fifth-place finish after starting on the pole and leading the first 19 laps. ... The Bill Hendren Memorial — on the undercard of the 30th annual Pittsburgher 100 — was run on Sunday after torrential afternoon rain and its residual effects forced the postponement of Saturday night's scheduled program. ... FK Rod Ends was the presenting sponsor of the race held in honor of the late engine builder, who passed away March 9, 2011. … The RUSH tour made its second and final visit to PPMS this season. … Along with $100 from FK Rod Ends, fast-qualifier Grant Garrison received a brand new GoPro Hero camera, plus accessories, from CrateInsider.com. ... Chuck Medved earned $500 for winning Friday's 15-lap, 13-car non-winners' race over Bob Schwartzmiller and Josh Stoica.
On the move: Jeremy Wonderling of Wellsville, N.Y., started 16th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Charlier’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Bud’s, Three Rivers Karting, NAPA Auto Parts, Accu-Force Dynos and Testers, Bob Siemon Garage Doors, Donaldson Supply Co., Knuckleheads Pizza, Kurt Thompson Real Estate, 2 Brothers Motorsports, Ingram Engines, Octane Graphics and Tri-State Motorsports.
Points chase: Jason Genco (1,125) of Frewsburg, N.Y., entered the event leading Jeremy Wonderling (1,113), Brady Wonderling (1,074), Adam Ferri (999) and J.J. Mazur (957).
