Brandon Overton gets rolling at Screven before his $5,000 Ultimate Southeast Series victory.
What won the race: Polesitter Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., led all 50 laps at Screven Motor Speedway, topping Chris Ferguson to win Friday’s Georgia State Outlaw Championship. Driving a car fielded by Terry Caples and Mark McLeod, Overton earned $5,000 for winning the Ultimate Southeast Series season-finale.
Quotable: “I’ve got to thank (car owners) Terry Caples and Mark McLeod for believing in me and giving me something to do this weekend. They’ve got a hell of a race car here,” said Overton. “I love coming over here. This is an awesome racetrack. You can race all over it. You don’t ever know what to expect, that’s one good thing.”
Key notes: Overton finished 2.06 seconds ahead of Ferguson. … The victory was Overton’s first Ultimate Southeast win of the season and third of his career. His other wins came at North Georgia Speedway and Virginia Motor Speedway in the first two events of the 2017 season. … Eight of the 18 starters completed all 50 circuits. … Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., and Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., finished tied for the series championship, with Mitchell earning the title via tiebreaker (most wins). Hardy entered the race leading the standings by two points over Mitchell, who pulled into a tie with a third-place finish versus Hardy's fifth. … Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., was behind the wheel of Ryan Crane’s No. 10. … It was the tour’s first visit to the the Sylvania, Ga., oval this season and fourth in series history. … Travis Pennington of Stapleton, Ga., won the $2,000 Fastrak Racing Series main event on Friday’s undercard.
On the move: Hardy started 11th and finished fifth in his bid to capture the Ultimate Southeast title.
