Dustin Mitchell (right) picked up a season-opening Southeastern Late Model Sportsman win at Cherokee.
What won the race: Fast qualifier Dustin Mitchell of Pine Level, N.C., outran Kenny Collins Saturday at Cherokee Speedway for his first career Southeastern Late Model Sportsman victory. Mitchell earned $2,000.
Key notes: Mitchell, who served as a crewman for G.R. Smith's short-lived Georgia-Speedweeks action last month, was triumphant in his first start of 2019. ... The race was part of Cherokee’s #GigiStrong March Madness weekend event, but Sunday’s headlining $12,000-to-win Southern All Stars race was postponed to March 24 due to a rainy forecast.
Winner's sponsors: Mitchell drives a Rocket Chassis with sponsorship from Team Xtreme Tire & Auto, CDT Performance & Off-Road, Donnie’s Body Shop, MAC Tools by Berry Daughtry, Clary’s Used Cars, Creech Plumbing & Septic, Lucas Lawn Care, 3 Acres Speedshop, Team 22 Inc. and Battenbilt Racing Engines.
