A smoking Justin Weaver (72) overtakes Kyle Lee (2T) for the lead at Hagerstown.
What won the race: Justin Weaver of Williamsport, Md., overtook race-long leader Kyle Lee with lap two laps remaining, then held on despite an ailing engine to win Saturday's 30-lap Ultimate Northeast opener at Hagerstown Speedway. Weaver collected $3,000 for his first Super Late Model victory.
Quotable: “We had something going south there," Weaver said of the race's final circuits. "The motor sounded smooth, but I started smelling a little bit of oil. It was right when I was going for the lead, and I looked up at the scoreboard, I saw there was two laps to go, and I was like, 'Man, I think we can push this to the end.' I didn’t know if it was going to make it. If it went too bad, I was going to pull in ... but this is awesome."
Key notes: A multitime Limited Late Model champ, Weaver picked up the Coleman Racing No. 72 Super Late Model ride late last season. ... The victory guaranteed Weaver a starting spot in Hagerstown's April 13 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event. ... Lee, who started second but grabbed the lead at the initial green flag, built as much as a six-second edge before a caution flag waved for Jakob Piper on lap 12. He maintained a shorter advantage after the restart until reaching lapped traffic on lap 25 and then ceding the top spot to Weaver. ... Western Pennsylvania racers Mason Zeigler, Gregg Satterlee and Jared Miley finished third through fifth. ... A violent, high-speed crash in turn three during heat action involving Andy Anderson, Kirk Baker and Rodney Walls brought out a red flag. Baker's car rolled several times and Walls's machine also ended up on its roof; there were no injuries reported and Walls repaired his car to start the feature. ... Trever Feathers scratched after hot laps with engine woes.
On the move: Weaver started sixth.
