Winner Jason Covert (72) races with Max Blair (111) at Port Royal.
What won the race: Taking advantage of lapped traffic in the race's final moments, Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., slipped by pole-starting Dylan Yoder for the lead coming to the white flag and went on to a $3,000 win in Saturday's 30-lap Zimmer's United Late Model Series opener at Port Royal Speedway. Yoder, who led the race's first 28 laps, settled for second, 1.114 seconds behind Covert.
Key notes: The fifth-starting Covert's first triumph of 2019 was the second of his career in ULMS action. His previous win also came at Port Royal, in last year's tour opener. ... Making his season debut in his self-owned No. 0, the sixth-starting Rick Eckert reached third on lap 12 but couldn't climb any higher. ... Lernerville Speedway champion Michael Norris finished sixth in his Port Royal debut. ... Nick Dickson scratched after failing to record a qualifying lap because of electrical problems. ... Port Royal hosts another ULMS event Sunday as part of an afternoon doubleheader with Georgetown (Del.) Speedway promoter Brett Deyo's big-block modified Short Track Super Series. ... Friday's scheduled ULMS season opener at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., was postponed to March 29 by wet, cold and windy weather.
