What won the race: Turning back a furious rally by Jason Covert, Rick Eckert of York, Pa., scored a $3,000 victory in Friday night’s 30-lap Zimmer’s United Late Model Series feature at Williams Grove Speedway. Eckert passed race-long pacesetter Mason Zeigler for the lead on lap 23 and barely held off Covert, who charged from the rear after spinning on lap three but fell 0.170 of a second short at the finish line.
Quotable: "On the white flag lap into (turn) three I slid myself sideways, and I waited and waited," Eckert said of the feature's conclusion. "And when I was waiting I could hear somebody coming (Covert), and I was like, 'Oh, s---, I’ve got to get going. I had to pedal until I got to the traction to leave (the fourth corner). I was hoping I didn’t give it away on the last couple laps."
Key notes: Eckert's victory came in his third start of '19 in his self-owned car. It was his seventh career win at Williams Grove and his second triumph in ULMS action; his previous tour score came Oct. 12, 2012, at Hesston (Pa.) Speedway. ... Zeigler settled for a third-place finish after leading the race's first 22 laps. ... Justin Weaver outdueled Jeff Rine to finish fourth; Rine completed the top five after starting on the pole and running second until being overtaken by Eckert on a lap-17 restart. ... In addition to Covert's lap-three spin, cautions flew for Bryan Bernheisel's spin (lap two); fifth-place Michael Norris's powerless car (lap 17); Mike Lupfer (lap 18); and Dan Stone (lap 26). ... The event was one of three Super Late Model affairs scheduled for Williams Grove in 2019, preceding the June 7 KRS Graphics Super Late Model Challenge and the Aug. 16 World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series stop.
On the move: Gene Knaub of Dover, Pa., advanced from the 21st starting spot to finish ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Eckert’s self-owned Rocket car has a Jay Dickens engine and sponsorship from ppc Lubricants, Drydene Oil, Shenberger Dump Truckk Service, Firehouse Subs, Suburban Bowlerama, M&M Painting & Construction, Eckert Trucking, All-Star Performance, Hoosier Tire and AllAboutWraps.net.
