Zack Mitchell enjoys victory lane after winning Saturday's Ultimate Southeast Series stop at Friendship Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., rolled to a flag-to-flag victory worth $4,000 in Saturday night's Ultimate Southeast Super Late Model Series debut at Friendship Motor Speedway. The defending tour champion turned back challenges from Trent Ivey and Dustin Mitchell during the 40-lap feature to register his first series win of 2019.
Quotable: “I really had to hustle that thing for about 40 laps. I’m kind of out of breath,” Zack Mitchell said. “(Crew member) Jason, he was telling me that Trent (Ivey) was coming. I was making sure I minded all my P’s and Q’s, and hit my marks every lap. Actually my carburetor was stumbling a little, dumping over maybe a little bit, but I knew I just had to keep everything in line, keep everything straight.”
Key notes: Zack Mitchell crossed the finish line 1.016 seconds ahead of Trent Ivey. ... It was Zack Mitchell's third career Ultimate Southeast triumph; he won twice in his home state — at Laurens County Speedway and Lancaster Speedway — en route to claiming the tour's 2018 points title. ... Ivey's runner-up placing — in his first-ever Ultimate Southeast start — matched his career-best Super Late Model finish, which he tallied just one week earlier in a Carolina Clash event at Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway. He made his Super Late Model debut on March 24 at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C. ... Dustin Mitchell, who won March 23's Ultimate Southeast stop at County Line Raceway in Elm City, N.C., finished more than two seconds behind the victor in third place. ... Three caution flags for drivers who experienced mechanical issues slowed the race. … Six drivers completed all 40 circuits.
Winner's sponsors: Mitchell’s Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Eubanks Oil Co., Clary Hood Inc., Millwood Plumbing, Mechanical Edge and Hi-Bridge Automotive.
