Tyler Bruening celebrates his first career win on Malvern Bank tour.
What won the race: Taking the lead on lap nine after contact with race leader Nick Deal sent the series rookie spinning, third-starting Tyler Bruening of Decorah, Iowa, picked up his first career Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series victory Friday at Marshalltown Speedway. Bruening earned $2,000 in outrunning Richie Gustin and Bill Leighton Jr.
Quotable: “The car was phenomenal tonight,” said Bruening. “I just want to start by saying I feel really bad about getting into the leader (Nick Deal) there. He come down and I (did) everything I could do to try to hold up and not get into him. I really feel bad about that. But the car was really good, made good adjustments on it all night long. We unloaded good (and) just made little tweaks here and there.”
Key notes: Bruening became the tour’s second-straight first-time winner following the April 6 win by fellow Iowan Nick Deal. … Bruening and Gustin swapped the lead midway through the main event before Bruening secured it and pulled away. ... Tad Pospisil of Norfolk, Neb., went for a wild ride, flipping out of the speedway during time trials. He was reportedly uninjured. … The series made its debut at Marshalltown. … Six-time series champion Kyle Berck of Marquette, Neb., who has a series-best 80 victories, finished fourth after starting from the pole.
