Craig Parker on his way to a SWDRA victory at Canyon Speedway Park.
What won the race: Craig Parker of Waddell, Ariz., slipped by teammate John Cornell with four laps remaining Saturday at Canyon Speedway Park and grabbed his first Southwest Dirt Racing Association victory of the season. The polesitting Cornell settled for second as Parker became the first driver of the season besides Minnesota interloper Don Shaw to grab an SWDRA victory.
Key notes: Parker has six career SWDRA victories. ... John Cornell led 21 laps but got too high in turns three and four on lap 21, leaving the door open for Parker. ... Bruce Duckett finished fourth despite suffering a hand injury when he was struck by debris on the second lap; he was attended by medics postrace and planned to seek X-rays. ... Bud Grossenbacher started outside the front row and battled in the top five before a flat tire forced him out. ... Brian Schultz lost power on the 16th lap and collected Steve Stultz, drawing the first caution and ending the night for both drivers. ... Brett Hegeman won the $100 Bobbi Engle Benjamin bonus.
On the move: James Laing of Tucson, Ariz., started seventh and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Parker's Cornell Racing Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Klein Engines, EMD Wraps, Mom Accounting and ATEC Engineering.
Points chase: Craig Parker moves into the series points leader over John Cornell and Bruce Duckett.
