Ross Bailes picked up a $4,014 winner's check at Laurens County.
What won the race: Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., set fast time and led all 40 laps of the third annual Ronnie Brookshire Memorial, picking up a $4,014 Ultimate Southeast Series victory Saturday. Bailes crossed the finish line 0.751 seconds ahead of runner-up Casey Roberts.
Quotable: “The restart before the last one, I felt really good through the middle here and pulled away a little bit,” Bailes said. “Then on that last restart I didn’t seem like I could make it work as good and Casey (Roberts) could stay right there with me. The track was pretty hard and I didn’t want to eat my right rear (tire) up, so I was kinda slowing up a good bit getting in (the turns) just to try to save the tire.”
Key notes: Ross Bailes earned his first Ultimate Southeast Series victory of the season and fifth of his career. … Thirteen cars finished the race with 12 completing all 40 circuits. … The victory comes three weeks after Bailes scored his first career Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series victory. … Bailes survived an early scare in lapped traffic that allowed Casey Roberts to briefly pull alongside. As the laps wound down, Roberts was three-tenths of a second faster than the leader, but after closing to the rear deck of Bailes’ car, he was unable to get around. … The race was slowed by four cautions and one red flag, but no serious incidents. … Dennis Franklin was unable to make the starting grid after experiencing engine trouble. … The Ultimate Southeast Series made its lone stop at the Laurens County.
On the move: Anthony Sanders of Spartanburg, S.C., started 12th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Bailes drives a Barry Wright Race Car powered by a Clements Racing Engine with sponsorship from C&H Paving, Felony Farms, Nichols Plumbing, Bailes Construction, Hoosier Tire and Penske Shocks.
Points chase: Before Laurens County, Zack Mitchell (123 points) of Enoree, S.C., leads Daulton Wilson (95), Dustin Mitchell (68), Brandon Overton (66) and Donald McIntosh (61).
