Bobby Pierce celebrates his second MLRA win of the weekend and third of the season.
What won the race: Leading all 25 laps from outside the front row, Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., dominated Saturday’s Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association visit to West Liberty Raceway. On a heavy, hooked up racetrack, Pierce outran Chad Simpson early and then stayed comfortably ahead of runner-up Will Vaught late to secure his second MLRA triumph of the weekend, earning $5,000.
Quotable: “It was a little choppy out there, so just glad we hung onto it,” Pierce said. “Besides the track being a little rough it was a pretty fun place. There was actually a cushion on the inside of the track right next to the tires and if you hit it right you could sail through there pretty good. It definitely had a lot of characteristic in this race track tonight that's for sure, and you can't complain about that.”
Key notes: Pierce notched his sixth career MLRA victory, tying him with Tony Cardin of Greenbrier, Ark., and Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., at 23rd on the tour’s all-time win list. He has three MLRA victories this season. … The race was red-flagged on lap eight when Jordan Yaggy of Rochester, Minn., took a wild flipping ride that left his No. 77 destroyed. Yaggy walked away under his own power. … Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who won the MLRA’s 2015 visit to West Liberty, retired during the lap-eight red flag while holding fourth. … After climbing to second, eighth-starting Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., suffered a flat right rear tire. He pitted and returned to finish eighth. … Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, who won the tour's last visit to the half-mile oval in 2016, finished 16th. … Terry Phillips and Jesse Stovall were among drivers with mechanical problems early in the night and scratched from the event before the scheduled consolation race, which ended up being scrapped.
On the move: Joe Gorby of Bartlesville, Okla., started 20th and finished 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce's Rocket Chassis has a Pro Power Racing Engine with sponsorship from Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Premier Waste Services, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing, Berger’s Marina, Digital Copy Systems, First Spear, Quality Paint & Body and Advanced Suspension.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Will Vaught (384 points) of Crane, Mo., led Mitch McGrath (338), Payton Looney (326), Logan Martin (324) and Jesse Stovall (300).
