What won the race: Retaking the lead on lap 47, fifth-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., led the final four circuits, outrunning hometown driver Casey Haney to score a $2,500 Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series victory at Whynot Motorsports Park. Winger finished 0.574 seconds ahead of Haney at the checkered flag.
Quotable: “This has got to be one of my favorite racetracks because I have two wins this season, and they both came here,” Winger said. “I’ve got to thank Jimmy Waldrop for towing all of the way up here from Tampa, Fla., and letting me drive this car tonight. I drove it earlier this year down in Florida and it’s a fine handling race car.”
Key notes: Winger scored his second victory of the 2019 season; he captured his first career Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series victory at Whynot back in April. … Winger and runner-up Casey Haney battled side-by-side late with Winger pulling away in the final two laps. … The race had five leaders: Tyler Wood (1-9); Cruz Skinner (10-29); Winger (30-36, 38-45, 47-50); Justin McRee (37); and Haney (46). … The first caution fell on lap 30 when early leader Cruz Skinner got into the backstretch wall. … A yellow flag waved on lap 41 when Spencer Hughes slowed on the backstretch. … McRee spun to draw a caution on lap 45. … A yellow flag flew on lap 46 when Tyler Wood and Jake Rainey tangled in turn four. … The race was slowed by a string of cautions in the final laps, setting up a three-lap dash to the finish.
On the move: Casey Haney of Meridian, Miss., started 18th and finished second.
Winner's sponsors: Winger drove a Rocket for Florida's Jimmy Waldrop with sponsorship from Johnny Doan Plumbing.
Points chase: Heading into the weekend, Jake Knowles (196 points) of Rome, Ga., leads John Ownbey (194), David Kay (180), Jadon Frame (178) and T.J. Britain (176).
