What won the race: Travis Pennington of Stapleton, Ga., streaked to a $3,000 victory in Sunday's 50-lap National Late Model Super Car Series Memorial Day Shootout at Cochran Motor Speedway. The reigning tour champion assumed command on a lap-13 restart when race-long pacesetter Dalton Cook faltered and went on to beat a rallying Cook by 0.730 of a second.
Key notes: Pennington, who won a NLMSCS event at Cochran last year, registered his second series win of the season. His previous score came April 27 at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, Ala. ... Cook controlled the race's first 13 circuits, but he found himself in a big hole after experiencing trouble on the restart. He fell as far back as seventh before coming on strong during the late stages to salvage a runner-up finish. ... The NLMSCS was back in action following a month-long hiatus. … The series kicked off the weekend Saturday at East Alabama.
