Michael Chilton celebrates his richest career victory at Richmond.
What won the race: Leading all 50 laps, polesitter Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., fought back mid-race challenges from fifth-starting Riley Hickman and outran Jackie Boggs in the late stages Saturday to score a career-richest $6,000 victory. His Mike Roland Memorial victory came in the first Southern All Star event at Richmond.
Quotable: "I started to inch away from (Boggs and Dohm), and we caught that traffic there," Chilton said. "Man, them (slower cars) just hugged the bottom. I hated to roll that outside, but I thought if I don't, one of them is going to. So I rode the outside of that lapped car there and it worked out good for us."
Key notes: Chilton notched his second career Southern All Star victory; his first came last August at Smoky Mountain Speedway. … Saturday’s victory marked Chilton’s third of the 2019 season; his previous two came at Lake Cumberland Speedway, including the May 25 Johnny Wheeler Memorial. … The race was slowed by nine cautions. … The first yellow flag waved on lap one when John Ownbey spun in turns three and four while battling for second, collecting Billy Franklin, Cody Mahoney, Camaron Marlar and others. … Jonathan Couch slowed on the ensuing restart; the next attempts saw Connor Meade break a driveshaft and collect several cars in turn two and a red flag displayed when Zach Leonhardi and Cody Mahoney tangled in turns one and two with Leonhardi’s car coming to rest atop Mahoney’s. … After running as high as second, Kirk Phillips came to a stop on lap 10. ... The final yellow flag flew on lap 30 when Shawn Martin slowed in turn one. … Hickman challenged Chilton at the halfway mark before falling back to sixth; he retired early after making contact with the wall.
On the move: Jackie Boggs started 12th and finished second. After pitting early and returning at the rear of the field, Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, Ind., rallied back to fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Chilton's Rocket Chassis with a Pro Power Racing Engine is sponsored by Parkview Home Center, Caton Industrial Painting, Chilton's Lawn & Maintenance, PPM Racing Products, Brucebuilt Performance and Kamikazi Web Works.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Riley Hickman (508) of Ooltewah, Tenn., led David Breazeale (506), Zach Leonhardi (502), Billy Franklin (440) and Andrew Littleton (332).
