Chad Simpson celebrates his $3,000 MLRA win at Dubuque.
What won the race: After first holding off challenges from Tyler Bruening, third-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa., outran his younger brother Chris Simpson in the final four circuits of Saturday’s 40-lap Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Association event at Dubuque Speedway to capture his 12th series victory. Winning by 1.416 seconds, Chad Simpson pocketed $3,000.
Quotable: "Bruening was just in the wrong place at the wrong time when I chased him down and got by him in the lapped traffic," said Chad Simpson, who credited his crewmen, Gus Farmer and Waylon Schultz, for signaling him where to run on the track. "I knew there at the end my brother would be pretty good on the bottom, so I had to make sure I covered that bottom too."
Key notes: Chad Simpson registered his first victory since debuting his self-owned team at the beginning of the season. ... The polesitting Bruening led laps 1-20 before being overtaken by Chad Simpson. The Decorah, Iowa, driver was mounting a bid to regain command with four laps to go when a broken driveshaft knocked him out of the race. ... Chris Simpson wasn't able to challenge his sibling after the final restart. ... MLRA points leader Will Vaught retired on lap 23 with front-end damage after contact with Bruening as they battled for second. ... Jeremy Grady spun out of fifth place on a lap-23 restart and Jeremiah Hurst brought out a lap-29 caution while running fourth. ... A dozen drivers finished all 40 circuits. … The MLRA tour visited Dubuque for the first time in series history.
On the move: Racing at his hometown track, Joel Callahan started 13th and finished fifth.
