Cory Hedgecock earned $3,000 for his first DLCS win of the season.
What won the race: Turning back a mid-race challenge from Brandon Williams, polesitter Cory Hegecock of Loudon, Tenn., led flag-to-flag to win Saturday’s 40-lap Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series-sanctioned Mountain Moonshine Classic at Smoky Mountain Speedway. Hedgecock finished 3.037 seconds ahead of Williams with Wil Herrington third.
Quotable: “I think the key to the win was setting fast time, earning the pole and getting the lead at the start of the race because running after the super late models, I felt it would be hard to pass,” Hedgecock said. “Once I got into lapped traffic, I ratcheted it down a little, but when I saw Brandon showing me his nose, I had to ratchet it back up.”
Key notes: Brandon Williams managed to pull alongside Hedgecock as they raced through traffic on lap 22, but after putting a couple of lapped cars between himself and the Crossville, Tenn., driver, Hedgecock built a half straightaway lead by lap 30. … Thirteen of the 18 starters finished the race, with eight competing all 40 laps. … Third-starting Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, Tenn., made just four laps and finished 18th. … John Ownbey of Cleveland, Tenn., did not start the feature. … Series points leader Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., finished sixth. … The Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series joined the Schaeffer’s Iron-Man Championship Series at Smoky Mountain.
On the move: Eli Beets of Knoxville, Tenn., started 16th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Hedgecock’s Rocket Chassis is powered by an Eagle Racing Engine and sponsored by Cushman, Five Star Hyundai, Eagle Racing Engines, K&P Used Cars, Transport One, Budget Transmissions, Valley Transport, VP Racing Fuels, VooDoo Technology and Timeless Memories Photography.
Points chase: Before Smoky Mountain, Jake Knowles (382 points) of Rome, Ga., led Cruz Skinner (332), Oakley Johns (320), Tyler Wood (316) and Jake Rainey (308).
