Jesse Stovall has help celebrating Saturday's $5,000 win at Salina Highbanks Speedway.
What won the race: Fending off a challenge from Terry Phillips with seven laps remaining, Jesse Stovall of Billings, Mo., picked up a $5,000 victory in the Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Assocation and Comp Cams Super Dirt Series co-sanctioned ARMI Freedom Classic at Salina Highbanks Speedway. Stovall crossed the finish line 3.582 seconds ahead of runner-up Phillips after the two made contact while battling for the lead.
Quotable: “I was trying to save my tires and I think they were starting to give up and I let Terry (Phillips) get back there to me and I didn't even know it. I seen him at the very last minute there when he slid across. He is a dear friend of mine and I think a hell of a lot of him. I wouldn't want to do that to any racer and that was not intentional,” said Stovall of the lap-33 contact with Terry Phillips. “I was just concentrating on not running over the cushion more than I was what was below me.
Key notes: With seven laps remaining Terry Phillips briefly grabbed the lead with a slider, but contact with Stovall slowed Phillips’s momentum and Stovall shot back to the lead. He went on to lead the rest of the way. … The victory was Stovall's 24th career MLRA win and his 11th career Comp Cams Super Dirt Series win. ... Salina Highbanks Speedway hosted the sixth annual ARMI Freedom Classic, a Friday-Saturday event co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil MLRA and the Comp Cams Super Dirt Series. … Stovall finished second Friday behind race winner Will Vaught of Crane, Mo. … Vaught, the MLRA points leader, finished 11th on Saturday. … Comp Cams Series points leader Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., finished seventh.
On the move: Morgan Bagley started 18th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Stovall’s Black Diamond Chassis is powered by a Scott Bailey Racing Engine and sponsored by driveWFX.com, Malvern Bank, Metal Magic Auto Hail Repair, Lucas Oil, Swafford’s Service and J.J. Propane.
