What won the race: Polesitter John Ownbey of Cleveland, Tenn., outran fourth-starting Cruz Skinner to win Wednesday’s Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series may event at Talladega Short Track. Ownbey finished 0.597 seconds ahead of Skinner in earning $2,500.
Quotable: “My crew worked hard all week to get us here, as we had to repair a lot of damage from last Saturday night’s race,” Ownbey said. “When we got the car ready to come here, we just used the setup we had when we won here in April. The track conditions were very similar tonight to what they were then, and it all worked out for us."
Key notes: Ownbey won his second Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series race of the season, adding to his April 27 series triumph at Talladega. … Runner-up Cruz Skinner took the second spot from Brandon Williams on the final lap. ... Williams was the only driver who threatened Ownbey, peeking under the leader's car amid traffic just before halfway. ... Fourteen of 24 starters completed 50 laps. … Series points leader Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., finished fourth. … Alabama Gang co-founder Red Farmer was the first retiree. He pitted on lap three.
On the move: Mike Combs of Odenville, Ala., started 20th and finished 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Ownbey's Kryptonite Race Car has a Phantom Racing Engine and is sponsored by Sam's Restaurant Equipment Sales, James Mowery Trucking, Chambers Equipment Sales, ORR Brothers Construction. M&S Motors, Elliott’s Tire, Car Smart and Henderson Motorsports.
Who to watch: Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., won the tour’s April 26 stop at TST.
Points chase: Before Talladega, Jake Knowles (470 points) of Rome, Ga., led Cruz Skinner (422), Wil Herrington (394), Tyler Wood (392) and Oakley Johns (390).
