Chris Madden cruises towards his first series victory of 2014.
What won the race: Polesitter and series points leader Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., jumped to the lead at the drop of the green flag and led all 53 laps for his first Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series triumph of the season and his 24th career series victory.
Quotable: "We've been working real hard, trying to get some speed back in our cars," Madden said, thanking chassis builder Scott Bloomquist, crew member and Penske Shocks. "We've had speed in our car for the past two weeks, we just ain't got no wins to show for it. It's like nothing ever lined up for us. Tonight we got everything lined up."
Key notes: Madden has not finished outside of the top 10 in the mini-tour's first nine events. ... The race was slowed by two cautions. ... The first yellow flew on lap one when Vic Hill of Morristown, Tenn., spun in turns one and two. ... Bo Eaton of Blue Ridge, Ga., and Tommy Kerr of Maryville, Tenn., tangled on lap 13 to draw a second caution. ... Hill and eventual runner-up Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., made contact during parade laps before the feature; Marlar suffered slight damage. ... Many competitors carried tributes to Izzi Leach on their cars at Smoky Mountain. She was the 3-year-old daughter of Smoky Mountain regular Mark Leach who drowned at a weekend pool party. ... More than $3,000 was raised for the family during Friday's event. ... Jason Welshan of Maryville, Tenn., was the winner of the Crate Late model event. ... Cory Hedgecock of Knoxville, Tenn., collected a $1,200 victory in the Limited Late Model special.
Winner's sponsors: Madden's Bloomquist Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine with sponsorship from Century Plastics, Cushman Paint & Body, Henderson Amusement, Hamrick's of Gaffney and Penske Shocks.
Points chase: Entering the event, Madden had 1,527 points to lead Eric Jacobsen (1,495) and Billy Ogle Jr. (1,451).
