Doug Drown celebrates his Wayne County Speedway victory.
What won the race: Doug Drown of Wooster, Ohio, turned back Tyler Carpenter’s last-lap, high-side charge to win Saturday’s Hans and Don Gross Memorial at Wayne County Speedway. Drown, who took advantage of his outside front-row starting position to grab the early lead, earned $3,000 for his first career Ultimate Mid-Ohio Valley Series victory.
Quotable: “When I kept seeing that 28 (Tyler Carpenter) creeping up through there, and then … obviously I didn’t know so I apologize to him on the last lap … just coming off the bottom like I did before and I thought I saw a white car that I could see at the corner and I went in too slow and yeah it was bad,” said Drown of contact with Tyler Carpenter on the final lap. “I feel bad. Sorry for tearing up his car. He has that never-say-die attitude. If anybody’s gonna go for it, it’s Tyler.”
Key notes: Drown grabbed the lead early over polesitter, Dave Hess Jr., and survived five cautions before holding off a charging Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., in the closing laps. Carpenter was the winner on Friday night at Hilltop Speedway (Ohio). ... Drown won Saturday's 15-lap super stock feature also.
