Ashton Winger won at Thunderhill for his first career Southern All Stars triumph.
What won the race: Taking the lead from Dane Dacus on an early restart, Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., won Saturday's rain-hampered Southern All Star main event at Thunderhill Raceway Park. Winger pocketed $4,000 for his first career SAS win. Dacus settled for second, with Josh Putnam third.
Quotable: “I felt like we were pretty good the whole time,” said Winger. “I was bottled up and I didn’t do what I needed to do on (the initial start). Then whenever (Josh) Putnam gave me the outside (on the restart) I just figured I’d try to get the best run I could down the straightaway and then wherever (Dane) Dacus didn’t go, I was gonna go. It worked out. Sometimes it doesn’t and we’re glad it did.”
Key notes: Ashton Winger started on the front row but fell back to fourth on the opening lap behind Dane Dacus, polesitter Brad Skinner and Josh Putnam. … He was in third when Skinner slowed in turn two to draw the first caution. … Dacus overshot his entry into turn one on the restart, alllowing Winger to scoot by. … Georgian Zach Leonhardi experienced engine trouble before the main event and jumped into the backup car of fellow rookie of the year candidate Billy Franklin of Calera, Ala., to make a few laps. ... Rain pushed the start of the 10-division program to late night; officials went straight to the feature with no other prelims following time trials. ... Dacus of Lakeland, Tenn., won the tour’s July 6 race at Thunderhill, which was shortened to 38 because of rain. ... The series hasn't had a repeat winner in nine races.
On the move: Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, Tenn., started 15th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by E-Z-Go, Keyser Mfg., Integra, Boydbilt Fabrication, Collins Signs, Turkey Creek Snacks, The Realty Queen & Team, Franklin Enterprises, Crown Security and Johnny Doan Plumbing.
Points chase: After Thunderhill, David Breazeale (780) of Four Corners, Miss., leads Riley Hickman (766), Zach Leonhardi (728), Billy Franklin (612) and Mark Dodson (534).
