What won the race: Rallying from the back after pitting to change a flat tire, Colten Burdette of Parkersburg, W.Va., captured the Buckeye Late Model Dirt Week finale by outrunning Henry Hornsby III and Tyler Carpenter in the West Virginia Dirt Cup to earn $5,000 payday Saturday on the Ultimate Mid-Ohio Valley Series at Princeton Speedway. Burdette slid ahead of Hornsby with four laps remaining and led the rest of the way.
Quotable: “I’ll tell you what, I’m kinda speechless. I mean, what a race. I don’t know what it was there them last couple of laps, but I know Henry (Hornsby) and I know Tyler (Carpenter) was giving 100 percent. Right before that caution, I wasn’t sure who was in second. It was gonna get pretty hairy going into that next corner.”
Key notes: Burdette’s crew replaced the flat tire with a tire he used in his heat. He said it wasn’t as good when he first returned to the track but it continued to get better as the race wore on. … Ryan Montgomery slowed to bring out a caution with three laps remaining, setting up a final dash to the checkers. … Burdette pulled away to win comfortably by nearly a straightaway. … Hornsby grabbed the lead from polesitter Tyler Carpenter on the opening lap. … Chris Meadows took the lead briefly when Hornsby slipped up the track in turn three near the halfway mark. Meadows lead was short-lived as he bobbled ib turn three, allowing Hornsby to dart by. … Princeton, which reopened at midseason, hosted the Ultimate Mid-Ohio Valley Series for the first time. ... Carpenter captured the points battle for the Buckeye Late Model Dirt Week, which concluded far south of Ohio in West Virginia.
Winner's sponsors: Burdette’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by KB Carburetors.
