Tanner English won $4,000 Friday at Ponderosa.
What won the race: Breaking through for an overdue victory, second-starting Tanner English of Benton, Ky., raced to a 40-lap win in Ponderosa Speedway’s unsanctioned Stars of Dirt on Friday. English finished 1.243 seconds ahead of fifth-starting Zack Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., in winning $4,000.
Quotable: “We tried to knock the wall down qualifying. We had a bad miss (in the engine). I thought we was about to have a bad night,” English said. “There’s been a lot of bad luck this year and I think maybe things are starting to turn around and maybe we’ll get some good runs going.”
Key notes: English’s victory came aboard his family-owned No. 96 after he finished fourth in July’s nine-race Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals Series while driving for Augie Bertram’s Florida-based Big Frog Motorsports. … Only five of the 14 starters finished on the lead lap. … Justin Ratliff, Josh Hampton and Connor Meade failed to start the feature. … Ratliff, of Campbellsville, Ky., qualified sixth overall and finished third in his heat. He was slated to start sixth in the feature. … Todd Coffman of Junction City won the Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Runner-up Zack Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., started fifth.
Winner's sponsors: English’s family-owned Rocket Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Race Engine and sponsored by Seay Motors, Jackson Madison County Auto Auction, Ted Brown’s Quality Paint & Body, Tommy Pope Construction, JDS Poultry, Chase Motorsports and JS Lawn Care.
