Daryn Klein takes the checkers for his first MARS victory.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead when fellow front-row starter and race-long leader Gordy Gundaker broke on a lap-19 restart, Daryn Klein of Fairview Heights, Ill., led the rest of Friday's 30-lapper at Tri-City Speedway for his first career Schaeffer's MARS Racing Series victory. Runner-up Jason Papich finished 0.886 seconds behind.
Quotable: “It was a little bit of a guess with Gordy breaking. I felt like we could keep up with him, but it was going to be really tight on a racetrack like this to get around him,” Klein said. “It was definitely challenging. Every caution was a good rest for my arm. It was definitely a man’s racetrack. It was fast, real fast."
Key notes: Gordy Gundaker and en route to a sweep of the night when he broke coming to the green on a lap-19 restart and spun into a mud puddle near the frontstretch wall; he'd set fast time and won his heat race before dominating the first 19 laps of the main event. ... Michael Kloos was running third when he slowed on lap 19. ... Co-MARS points leaders Dean Carpenter (first-lap caution) and David Seibers (gets into wall on lap 25) both retired early. ... Because of a rainy week, there was high water in the infield around the facility after a rainy week; scoring officials caught a ride in a backhoe to the infield tower.
On the move: Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., started eighth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Klein's Dargie-powered Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Klein's Appliance and Bedding, Randy Korte Consulting, Aggressive Graphics, Menard’s Jeep and Dodge Sales, Laura Buick, Penske Racing Shocks, Friederich Radiator and Meise Construction.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, David Seibers (1,090) and Dean Carpenter (1,090) are knotted atop series standings with Jose Parga (672) in third.
