What won the race: Regaining the lead from Dustin Strand with two laps remaining, double-division superstar Donny Schatz of Fargo, N.D., captured Friday's Northern LateModel Racing Association visit to River Cities Speedway. Schatz notched his third NLRA victory of the season and 10th of his career over Strand, who took the lead with five laps remaining but settled for second.
Quotable: “Dustin got by us there and we needed lapped traffic. We just had to go where he didn’t and it worked out,” Schatz said. “Thanks to everybody that’s been helping with (the Late Model). They are a lot of damn work, but they are even more fun.”
Key notes: Schatz also won the night's World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series feature. ... In NLRA action, Schatz also won at River Cities on June 7 and Nodak Speedway in Minot, N.D., on Aug. 4. ... After taking the lead from polesitter Brad Seng following a mid-race caution in the 25-lapper, Schatz lost the point to Strand on lap 21. ... He fought back to lead the final two laps. ... Joey Pederson led the first 10 laps from outside the front row before slowing and handing the lead to polesitter Brad Seng. ... Eighteen of 23 starters were running at the finish. ... Bryce Sward won the second heat to make his first NLRA feature; only half the eight starters finished. ... The tour's fifth and final visit to River Cities comes on the Sept. 5 series finale.
On the move: Runner-up Dustin Strand of Grand Forks, N.D., started 14th; Bill Mooney of Selkirk, Manitoba, started 23rd and finished eighth.
