Bobby Pierce raced to a MARS victory at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.
What won the race: Polesitter Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., took the lead on lap 10 and survived a late-race restart Saturday to win the $3,000 Schaeffer's Oil MARS Series feature at Federated Raceway at I-55.
Quotable: “I say it all the time, it’s one of my favorite tracks to come to. And when it gets like this it’s perfect," Pierce said, then discussed the late-race drama. "That last caution made me really nervous, because last time that happened it bit me in the butt. … Luckily I got a good restart."
Key notes: Pierce drove a backup car — his battle-tested Pierce Platinum machine rather than his usual XR1 Rocket — that he'd prepped for duty the previous night. ... Pierce chased Friday's Tri-City MARS winner Daryn Klein of Fairview Heights, Ill., for the race's opening nine laps. ... Pierce grabbed the lead from Klein on the 10th lap and never looked back, leading the final 21 laps. ... The race's second caution flew on the final lap, just before Pierce took the checkered flag, setting up a late-race restart. ... Pierce survived the green-white-checkered finish and cruised to win his eighth career MARS victory. Pierce is the eighth winner in as many MARS races. ... Brian Shirley's car suffered a broken driveshaft on lap 16 and drew the race's first caution. ... The feature started just before 10 p.m. and lasted just over 26 minutes.
On the move: Ken Rumble of House Springs, Mo., advanced nine positions to finish sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce's Pierce Race Car had a Pro Power Racing Engine with sponsorship from Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Premier Waste Services, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing, Berger’s Marina, Digital Copy Systems, First Spear, Quality Paint & Body and Advanced Suspension.
Points chase: After the weekend, David Seibers (1,450 points) led the standings over Dean Carpenter (1,438); they had entered the stretch of racing tied for the points lead.
