Michael Head Jr. Memorial winner Ashton Winger is joined in victory lane by Mike Head at Senoia.
What won the race: Polesitter Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., scored a flag-to-flag victory worth $5,454 in Saturday night's 54-lap Southern All Star Series-sanctioned Michael Head Jr. Memorial at Senoia Raceway. He controlled the action to defeat Michael Page by a hefty margin of 3.178 seconds.
Quotable: “We got out front there and I really felt like on them restarts the longer we’d go, the better I got,” said Winger. “On them restarts I think the crumbs would kinda settle (and) just kinda allow everyone to stay there with us. I felt like once I got going, I was gone. I’m telling you, man, this race car is one of the best race cars in the country. Anybody can drive it.”
Key notes: Winger registered his second career Southern All Star triumph just three weeks after his first, on Aug. 3 at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Summertown, Tenn. ... With his sixth overall victory of a breakout season, Winger ended Page's three-race win streak in SAS events at Senoia. ... The race was a makeup of a June 22 rainout. Riley Hickman of Oltewah, Tenn., who was second in series points entering the event, had a prior commitment and couldn’t return for the rescheduled event. … Only nine cars completed all 54 circuits. ... The event honored the late son of 1991 Southern All Stars champion Mike Head of Ellenwood, Ga. Mike Head, who was on hand to greet Winger in victory lane, was an SAS winner at Senoia in 1987. … Page won the evening's Crate Late Model feature.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by E-Z-Go, Keyser Mfg., Integra, Boydbilt Fabrication, Collins Signs, Turkey Creek Snacks, The Realty Queen & Team, Franklin Enterprises, Crown Security and Johnny Doan Plumbing.
