What won the race: Denying Anthony Sanders a first series victory after he'd led 38 laps, Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., grabbed the lead on a restart with two laps remaining Sunday at Cherokee Speedway for a $5,000 Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series victory.
Quotable: “We were fighting fuel issues last night (at South Carolina’s Lancaster Speedway). We thought it was the motor and we went to the shop and changed the motor and still fought the same problem tonight,” said Bailes. “I think we got it narrowed down to what it is. We thought we had an engine problem. We thought the motor was laying down there at the end, but I think it’s fuel related.”
Key notes: The Hall of Fame Classic gave Bailes his first Carolina Clash victory of the season and 14th of his career. ... Despite missing hot laps, Bailes was the only driver under 15 seconds in time trials. ... Cherokee hosted the Carolina Clash Series for the second time this season. … Bailes is the sixth series winner in nine series races. ... He also ended the two-race winning streak of Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., who entered Cherokee fresh off two weekend Ultimate Southeast victories in Lavonia, Ga., and Lancaster, S.C.
On the move: Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., started 16th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Bailes drives a Barry Wright Race Car powered by a Clements Racing Engine with sponsorship from C&H Paving, Fred Caldwell Chevrolet, Nichols Plumbing, Felony Farms, Bailes Construction, STI Transport, Hoosier Tire and Penske Shocks.
Points chase: Entering the event, Brett Hamm (871 points) of Newberry, S.C., led Jeff Smith (808), Dennis Franklin (807), David Yandle (730) and Adam Yarbrough (682).
