Ricky Thornton Jr. dominated the last half of Monday's 50-lapper.
What won the race: Driving Todd Cooney's car, Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., overtook race-long leader Joe Zrostlik on the 15th lap and led the rest of Monday's Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Boone Speedway for his first career series victory. The fifth-starting Thornton earned $2,000 while building a half-track lead in the race's late stages; he won by 5.361 seconds over runner-up Justin Kay, who started 10th.
Quotable: "I gotta thank Todd for letting me do this," Thornton said. "We changed a couple of things after the heat race, and oh my God, is this thing good."
Key notes: Thornton is a previous Speedway Motors Supernationals winner in the modified division (he's the third driver to win in both the Late Models and modifieds). ... Joe Zrostlik led the first 14 laps. ... Josh Most stopped in turn two to draw the 50-lapper's lone caution on the second lap. ... Blair Kraus won a Deery Brothers heat for the first time (he retired in the feature while running sixth). ... Jeff Aikey got into the frontstretch wall at the outset of the third heat but a caution gave him a restart that allowed him to recover. ... Charlie McKenna has a costly spin in the second heat (trying to avoid Kyle Krampe). ... Boone hosted the 499th series event.
On the move: Tyler Bruening of Decorah, Iowa, started 13th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton's Todd Cooney-owned No. 30 is sponsored by May Properties, Spangler Automotive, Allen's Seamless Gutters, KS Engineering and Dynamic Drivelines.
