David Payne (8) chases Kenny Collins (1c) at Tri-County.
What won the race: In a tight late-race battle, home-track racer David Payne of Murphy, N.C., slipped by race-long leader Kenny Collins on the second-to-last lap Monday at Tri-County Racetrack for a $3,000 Schaeffer's Iron-Man Championship Series victory. Payne hounded Collins for a dozen laps before his outside pass exiting turn two on lap 34.
Quotable: “I had to drive the wheels off of it. I mean, Kenny was good. I was just trying to go where he wasn’t and try not to get into him and race him clean. We had a heckuva battle there,” Payne said. “How about this racetrack? We’ve been to three racetracks in three days and there ain’t nowhere we’ve raced like this."
Key notes: Payne also won a Blue Ridge Outlaws event earlier this season at Tri-County. ... Monday's runner-up Kenny Collins started outside the front row and led 33 laps. ... Eight drivers completed 35 laps. ... The Schaeffer's Iron-Man Championship Series made its first trip to Tri-County. ... The race was originally set for Aug. 23 but rained out. … Collins won the Southeastern Late Model Sportsman Series event on the undercard, earning $1,500.
On the move: Kurt English of Murphy, N.C., started 11th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Payne's Jay Dickens-powered Capital Race Car is sponsored by Gibson Motorsports, Payne Excavating, Interstate Welding, PPM Racing Products, American Racer Tire, Base Racing Fuel and Schaeffer’s Oil.
Points chase: Entering the event, Robby Moses (1,490 points) of Maryville, Tenn., led Joseph Faulkner (1,420) and Joey Standridge (1,380).
