Brandon Overton waves to the crowd at 311 Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Piloting a new Longhorn Chassis in a dominant performance, outside polesitter Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., outran fellow front-row starter Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., to score a flag-to-flag victory worth $10,000 in Saturday night's 60-lap Schaeffer's Fall Nationals Series feature at 311 Motor Speedway.
Quotable: “I was just trying to follow ‘em. I didn’t want to get too close,” Overton said of his strategy while approaching lapped cars as the leader. “I mean, somebody had to be awfully good to get around me on the outside over there, but anything could’ve happened.”
Key notes: Overton, the 2019 Southern Nationals champion, captured his second Fall Nationals victory of the season. His previous came on Oct. 11 at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, N.C. … It was Overton's 12th win with Rum Runner Racing and 13th victory overall of the 2019 season. Nine of his triumphs have paid $10,000 or more. ... The polesitting Hardy was outgunned by front-row mate Overton for the lead but ran strong in second for the entire distance in Billy Hicks's machine, finishing 4.950 seconds behind Overton. ... Four caution flags slowed the A-main and nine drivers completed all 60 laps. … After running as high as third, Chris Ferguson retired early with starter problems. … Ross Bailes was battling for fifth on lap 21 when he slid sideways and came to a stop in turn two. ... The race's final caution flag was on lap 49 when Trent Ivey slowed. ... Making a rare Dirt Late Model start this season, Overton's team manager, Joey Coulter, was running fifth on the feature's final lap when he blew a right-rear tire. ... With his ninth-place finish, Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., clinched the 2019 Fall Nationals Series championship. ...The track dedicated the night's racing to longtime driver Keith Jacobs, who died after suffering an apparent medical issue while competing in Friday's action at 311; the 58-year-old Jacobs had race at 311 since 1991, often in Late Model-style divisions.
On the move: Chase Junghans of Manhattan, Kan., started 10th and ran third.
Winner's sponsors: Overton’s Rum Runner Racing Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Broward Armature & Generator, CIV Driver Optimization, Molecule, Race-Fan, Simpson Products, Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Burning Bright Band, Dean Guitars, Shell Shock and Tempest Cycles.
