PHENIX CITY, Ala. (Nov. 3) — Backing up his victory in September’s Alabama State Championship, second-starting Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., won Sunday’s feature for 604 Crate Late Models on the undercard of the 45th annual National 100 for a $5,000 payday.
Whitener led all 50 laps in a race slowed by eight cautions, the last of which waved with six laps remaining. He pulled away on the restart to win by 1.328 seconds ahead of third-starting Pierce McCarter of Knoxville, Tenn.
Polesitter Ricky Culpepper of Hamilton, Ga., finished third, while Blake Smith of Dublin, Ga., started and finished fourth. Austin Horton of Newnan, Ga., improved five spots to complete the top five.
