Jimmy Elliott tunes up Sunday before his Newsome Crate Racin' USA Winter Shootout Series victory.

What won the race: Repeating their 1-2 finish from a year ago, Tennesseans Jimmy Elliott and Ronnie Johnson were again the fastest Newsome Crate Racin’ USA drivers at Talladega Short Track on Sunday. Elliott, of Cleveland, grabbed the lead from the pole-sitting Johnson on the opening lap and led all 50 circuits en route to his second straight Winter Series triumph at TST.

Key notes: The Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series kicks off its season at the 29th annual Ice Bowl. … It’s the first of nine scheduled events as the miniseries goes to Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. EASTABOGA, Ala. — Repeating their 1-2 finish from a year ago, Tennesseans Jimmy Elliott and Ronnie Johnson were again the fastest Newsome Crate Racin’ USA drivers at Talladega Short Track on Sunday. Elliott, of Cleveland, grabbed the lead from the pole-sitting Johnson on the opening lap and led all 50 circuits en route to his second straight Winter Series triumph at TST.

Johnson, of Chattanooga, dogged the leader throughout the 50-lap distance, but just like 2019, the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer settled for second.

Pierce McCarter of Knoxville, Tenn., finished third, while Chase Walls of Decherd, Tenn. Loudon, Tenn.’s Cory Hedgecock finished fifth as drivers from the Volunteer State swept the top five. Elliott earned $3,000 for his victory, which was part of TST’s 29th annual Ice Bowl.
