Pearson Lee Williams celebrates his first Super Late Model victory.
What won the race: Outside front-row starter Pearson Lee Williams of Dublin, Ga., led all but the first lap Saturday at Modoc Speedway to capture the finale of the offseason’s Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series, earning $7,000 for his first Super Late Model victory. Williams took the checkers 1.289 seconds ahead of Zack Mitchell while Casey Roberts was third.
Quotable: "I can't thank my crew enough. They busted their tails seven days a week, 24/7, they never gave up on me," Williams said. “I’m a newcomer in this stuff, so we took our lumps on the chin and they were right behind me every single time."
Key notes: Williams, a Crate and Limited standout, was a former crew member for Rum Runner Racing who was promoted to driving duties by team manager Joey Coulter last fall upon Brandon Overton's departure. ... Williams, who didn't get to wave the checkered flag atop his car because the flag fell off the flagstick as he climbed up, called the victory "like a dream." ... Fourteen of 24 starters completed 40 laps. ... The feature was red-flagged on the second lap to rework the track surface for about 25 minutes. ... Polesitter John Henderson retired leading on the first lap when his right-rear tire was cut down after contact with Williams. ... Brent Dixon lost a top-10 run with engine problems on lap 32. … Besides Henderson, Johnny Pursley and Jonathan Davenport also didn’t officially complete a lap. … Mark Whitener scratched.
On the move: Kyle Strickler of Mooresville, N.C., started 13th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Pearson’s Rum Runner Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Mullins Race Engine and sponsored by Bilstein, PFC Brakes, Race-Fan, Simpson, Molecule Motorsports and DirtWrap.
Points chase: Drydene-sponsored Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C. wrapped up the $20,000 series championship.
