Johnny Scott waves from victory lane at Lucas Oil Speedway.
What won the race: Overtaking race-long leader Payton Looney with two laps remaining, the low-running Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., captured his first career Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association victory Wednesday at Lucas Oil Speedway. Scott earned $5,000 in taking the checkers 0.703 seconds ahead of Looney, who started outside the front row.
Quotable: "I kept brushing my nose down there on them (infield) tires, and if I could hit it just right I could get a heck of a run," Scott said. "I gotta thank my crew, we have been working our butts off to get these things up front. We have been trying to follow that Lucas Oil tour and them guys have been beating on us hard, so we just came to run this deal this week to get some more experience. This is just my second night out in this XR1 and I gotta thank Mark Richards for all his help."
Key notes: Runner-up Payton Looney was also looking for his first MLRA victory but ran out of tires. "I was a sitting duck those last 10 laps and I knew it," he said. "I don't know, just trying to hang on and hang on and make the car was wide as I could. I guess I'm just cursed here. We'll keep trying, though." ... Looney also apologized for his part of a heat race tangle with Tony Jackson Jr. ... Third-finishing Jesse Stovall had won the previous two MLRA features at Wheatland. ... Four cautions between laps 12-16 slowed the action, including one for a turn-one pileup which polesitter Justin Duty got the worst of, retiring after 16 laps. ... The event was originally scheduled to pay $3,000-to-win, but bumped to $5,000 in opening a four-race stretch.
On the move: Jeremy Grady of Story City, Iowa, started 13th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Scott's Rocket Chassis is powered by a Mullins Race Engine and sponsored by Mesilla Valley Transportation, Rancho Milagro, Intercomp, Boller Motorsports, Maxima Racing Oils, Top of the World Ranch, VP Racing Fuels, Eagle Moon Farms, Wehrs Machine and Vanderbuilt.
