R.J. Conley gets up to speed before his $10,000 victory.
What won the race: Running virtually unchallenged, polesitter R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, led flag-to-flag in Saturday’s Fireball 50 at Atomic Speedway to capture $10,000. The former track champion lapped all but three competitors in taking the checkers ahead of Freddie Carpenter and Steve Casebolt.
Quotable: "I knew i had a really fast race car," the winner said. "I came out of the corners wide open. I didn't have to ease on the throttle there for a long time. When your car's really good, you just know it."
Key notes: The winner had half-track margin on runner-up Freddie Carpenter before a caution appeared with 10 laps remaining. ... Steve Casebolt rallied after an early flat tire to finish third. ... Just as an early caution flag flew, flames appeared under the hood of second-running Devin Moran's car, forcing him out. ... Dave Hornikel slowed for an early yellow. ... Tyler Carpenter was running third late when mechanical problems forced him out. .... Robbie Bostic spun and got into the inside frontstretch wall for another caution. ... The event was recently added as the track that lost the first half of its season has been scheduling and running frequent Super Late Model specials. ... The fast qualifying Devin Moran received $500 courtesy of longtime track supporters Todd George and Josh Blevins along with Richmond (Ky.) Raceway. ... Modified and sport mod features were postponed to a later date by rain.
On the move: The winner's father, Delmas Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, started 10th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Conley's Draime-powered Rocket is sponsored by Conley Trucking, Conley River Terminal, Dave Poske's Performance Parts and Shane Custom Decals.
Points chase: Entering the event, Freddie Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., led Steve Casebolt (373) and Dave Hornikel (329) in track points.
