What won the race: Track champion Dave Hess Jr., of Waterford, Pa., dove under in turn three to overtake pole-starting Max Blair early and raced to a $4,000 victory Friday in the Bob Rohrer Memorial portion of the September Sweep at Eriez Speedway. Blair settled for second in the 40-lapper.
Quotable: “Max has become obviously the best talent around here. He’s just tough to beat week in and week out,” Hess said. “(With Blair starting) on the front row, I knew it was going to be tough to get by. We made the move there early and got the lead and the car was great. My guys were letting me know he was kind of closiing the gap there — which I always expect, he’s just awesome on those long runs — but that caution worked out great and we were able to hold him off."
Key notes: After losing the lead, Blair kept in touch with Hess and briefly pulled alongside with 11 laps remaining as the leaders worked through traffic. The last of three cautions gave Hess clean racetrack the rest of the way. ... Cautions appeared for a Dave Lyon spin, Jon Hodgkiss stopping just off the frontstretch and for a slowing Dutch Davies with nine laps remaining. ... Thirteen drivers completed 40 laps. ... The September Sweep concludes on Saturday, with a $6,000-to-win Super Late Model feature.
On the move: Wyatt Scott of Garland, Pa., started 12th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Hess drives a No. 44 sponsored by Hess' Garage & Salvage, Amsoil and Genesis Shocks.
Points chase: Dave Hess Jr. won the Super Late Model championship at Eriez.
