Jonathan Davenport (49) leads the Southern All Star field in Isom, Ky.
What won the race: Taking the lead from Josh Putnam on lap 19, red-hot Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., went on to win Friday’s Walter ‘Peg’ Combs Memorial at Mountain Motorsports Park. Davenport finished 0.761 of a second ahead of Josh Rice to earn $4,000. Ryan King finished third.
Key notes: In winning his 10th career Southern All Stars race and first since 2019 at Cherokee Speedway, Davenport remained one of the nation’s hottest drivers. … The victory followed Thursday's $10,000 win in the Castrol FloRacing Night in America event at Tyler County Speedway and marks his seventh triumph of 2021. … Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., paced the first 18 circuits, before fading to fourth. ... Eight of 20 starters completed 40 laps. … Brandon Fouts of Kite, Ky., who won the first-ever Southern All Stars event at Mountain Motorsports Park last season, didn’t get a chance for two in a row as he had mechanical trouble as he pulled onto the track for hot laps and withdrew from the event. … Shannon Thornsberry of Martin, Ky., earned the Wells Motorsports fast time award, setting a new track record with a 14.133-second lap. ... After starting on the pole, Thornsberry failed to lead a lap and faded to finish seventh. ... Friday's feature was slowed by three cautions and lasted just under 30 minutes. … There’s yet to be a repeat winner in six SAS races this season. … Davenport joined Brandon Overton, G.R. Smith, Rusty Schlenk, Joseph Joiner and Pearson Lee Williams as series winners thus far (six drivers from four states). … The race honored track Hall of Famer Walter Combs, who piloted the No. 12 with great success in Eastern Kentucky. … The series returns to Mountain Motorsports Park on Aug. 7.
