What won the race: Fending off Brandon Overton’s late-race charge, race-long pacesetter Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., claimed his fifth career Southern All Star Series victory in Saturday night’s 54-lap Michael Head Jr. Memorial at Senoia Raceway. The 21-year-old driver earned $5,054 in taking the checkers 1.212 seconds ahead of Overton, who was driving the car normally driven by his brother Cody.
Key notes: Returning to his native Southeast after spending the past two months on the road in the Midwest chasing the DIRTcar Summer Nationals, Winger raced off the pole to lead the race from flag-to-flag. ... A winner of an SAS race on May 22 at Senoia, Winger recorded his ninth overall triumph of 2021. Six of his wins came on the Summer Nationals. ... Saturday's program was delayed roughly two hours by rain that hit the track during hot laps. … Senoia has two more Super Late Model specials planned in 2021, a $10,000-to-win SAS race in October and the season-ending Peach State Classic that features a $10,000-to-win preliminary on Nov. 12 and a $52,000-to-win finale on Nov. 13.
On the move: Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., started 24th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Pro Power Racing Engine and sponsored by E-Z-Go, Keyser Mfg., Integra Shocks, Johnny Doan Plumbing, Boyd-Bilt Fabrication, Spring-Pro, Collins Signs, Turkey Creek Snacks, The Realty Queen Team and Advanced Technology Motorsports.
Points chase: Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., holds a commanding points lead.
