What won the race: Winning a late-race battle over Josh Rice, second-starting Michael Chilton recorded his seventh career Valvoline Iron-Man Racing Southern Series victory in Saturday’s 50-lap Harold Hardgrove Memorial at Lake Cumberland Speedway. He claimed the $10,022 first-place prize in the Valvoline Iron-Man Series event.
Key notes: Chilton overtook Tanner English for the lead on lap 38 and held it to the finish, but not without facing heavy late-race pressure from Rice. ... Kentucky's Rice followed Chilton past English and in the final circuits was able to actually slide ahead of Chilton, but Chilton pulled a cross-over move to maintain command. ... Chilton survived a caution flag with three laps remaining for an incident involving Camaron Marlar. ... English slipped to a fifth-place finish after leading the race's first 37 laps. ... The Valvoline Iron-Man Series made the third of its four planned visits to Lake Cumberland; the race was co-sanctioned by Iron-Man’s northern and southern divisions.
