What won the race: Surviving the final circuits with a flat right-rear tire, polesitter Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., completed a flag-to-flag victory in Saturday night's 40-lap Bash at the Beach at Southern Raceway. The hometown racer held on to beat Billy Franklin by 0.666 of a second for a $5,000 top prize and his fourth career Southern All Star Dirt Series triumph.
Quotable: “I seen the board there was five laps left when I felt it start going down, and I’m like, ‘There ain’t no way,’” Joiner said. “I knew the tire wear wasn’t gonna be bad enough for it to be wore out … I didn’t know why I was having a flat. I honestly can not believe it rode around there for five more laps — and literally, right here at the checkered flag, it blew up.”
Key notes: Joiner slowed his place over the final five circuits due to his right-rear tire going flat, but Franklin's furious bid to run down the ailing leader fell just short. ... Joiner tallied his third career SAS win at his home track; he captured both series events there in 2019. ... After electing to start on the outside front row, Joiner lost the lead to Ryan Crane at the race's initial start, but a caution flag for a backstretch incident involving Matt Dooley triggered a complete restart. Joiner then muscled his way to the inside line at the entrance of turn one to gain command for good when the green returned as Crane slipped to fourth. ... Crane fought back to finish third, but he wasn't happy with Joiner afterward. "I wish I would've spun Joiner into the infield," he said when asked about the opening-lap scrape with Joiner. ... Continuing after his early incident, Dooley suffered a flat left-rear tire on lap 36 and finished eighth. ... Josh Putnam finished 13th after tagging the rear of the feature field in a car borrowed from Kendall Franklin; his own machine was sidelined by engine problems. ... Two cautions slowed the race, which lasted 20 minutes and saw seven drivers complete all 40 laps. ... Saturday's feature was originally scheduled as the second night of a doubleheader, but Friday's event was canceled due to inclement weather.
On the move: Ryan Wilson of Margaret, Ala., started ninth and finished fifth.
