Johnny Scott cruises toward an MLRA victory in Wheatland, Mo.
What won the race: Pulling off a clean sweep of the program, fast qualifier and polesitter Johnny Scott rolled to a $5,000 Spring Nationals victory in Friday’s 30-lap Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association weekend opener at Lucas Oil Speedway. He finished 1.349 seconds ahead of Jason Papich.
Quotable: “We kind of hit on some stuff over (at 81 Speedway) in Wichita and kind of have been sticking with that," Scott said. "I have to thank my brother (Stormy). Without him I wouldn't be here. He keeps me in the loop and tells me what I probably should run.”
Key notes: Scott scored his fourth career MLRA triumph and second of the season after winning at 81 Speedway on April 9. … Papich reached second on lap 20 when Kolby Vandenbergh, who had held the spot from the start, slipped high and fell to sixth. The Californian closed the gap on Johnny Scott over the remaining circuits but ran out of time. ... Stormy Scott, the winner's twin brother, finished third. ... Making his 2022 debut after eight straight rainouts, eventh-starting Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., was the first retiree of the race on lap 19. … The ninth annual Pitts Homes MLRA Spring Nationals weekend wraps up on Saturday with a $7,000-to-win finale. … Modifieds, B-mods, and stock cars are on Saturday’s card.
On the move: Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., started 14th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Scott’s Rancho Milagro Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Mesilla Valley Transportation, Top of the World Ranch, Bilstein, VP Racing Fuels, Eagle Moon Hemp and KBC Graphix.
