Jacob Hawkins celebrates in victory lane at Ohio's Atomic Speedway.
What won the race: Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, W.Va., led all 40 laps from the pole to pocket $10,000 for capturing Saturday night's Valvoline Iron-Man Northern Series-sanctioned Atomic 100 finale at Atomic Speedway. He held off a charge from 19th-starting Nick Bocook, who finished 1.043 seconds back in the runner-up position.
Quotable: "The track was tricky tonight," Hawkins said. "The bottom was way faster than last night, and that's where I passed Devin for the lead in the heat so I really didn't know where I needed to be in the feature. I was a little uneasy on where to be on the track, but the last 10 laps I probably settled in to the most comfortable line I had. It's an emotional roller coaster and I'm just glad that we finally got this done here. It's a big deal to us and it means a lot to get it."
Key notes: Hawkins earned the second Iron-Man Racing Series victory of his career. ... Jacob's brother, Jared, finished third. ... Defending Atomic 100 event winner Rod Conley executed a last-lap pass to place fourth. ... After running as high as third place on lap 25, Camaron Marlar faded in the closing laps and settled for fifth. ... Friday's $5,000 preliminary event, Devin Moran, hit the wall while running second on lap 22 but rebounded to finish eighth after changing a flat tire. ... After getting upside down in the second heat race, Vern LeFevers was physically OK but scratched for the evening. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by four cautions and lasted 24 minutes, with 11 competitors completing the entire distance.
On the move: Nick Bocook of Wheelersburg, Ohio, started 19th and finished second.
Winner's sponsors: Hawkins drives a C.J. Johnson Motorsports Rocket Chassis powered by a Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by J&J Farms, Middletown Homes, Cash Cabins, Bobby Lake Motorsports, MRRI, Melvin’s Transmission, OFK and Reed’s Grooving Services.
